The Artists
Dapeng Liu
Artist
Born in Beijing in 1982, Dapeng Liu moved to Sydney in 2007, where he completed a Master’s by research and pursued a PhD in art history at the University of Sydney, supported by an Australian Postgraduate Award. Since becoming a full-time painter in 2014, Liu has been a three-time Archibald Prize finalist and a Sulman Prize finalist, with works held in both Australian and international collections.
Liu’s practice delicately bridges Eastern and Western sensibilities. His landscapes recall the meditative spatiality of Chinese shan shui painting while embracing a contemporary language of geometry, abstraction, and surreal colour. Through this synthesis, he explores the dialogue between nature and human design, memory and imagination, creating contemplative spaces where mountain and water, structure and light, coexist in poetic harmony.
In Light We Dwell, solo exhibition 2025
This exhibition explores the dialogue between geometry and nature, abstraction and memory, reimagining the Chinese landscape tradition as a contemplative space where light, form, and imagination converge in quiet harmony.
Home of Wanderers, solo exhibition 2024
Home of Wanderers reimagines landscape painting through memory, imagination, and multi-perspective composition, blending ancient Chinese aesthetics with contemporary sensibilities to reveal the unfamiliar within the familiar.
The Ethereal Series explores the interplay between abstraction and figuration, using colour, form, and geometry to evoke contemplative landscapes that bridge the natural world and inner emotion.
